How to Play MHGU on 3ds
How to Play MHGU on 3ds
Alright so this isn’t really MHGU it’s MHXX… BUT I’m going to show you how to transfer your save from MHGen, Play it fully in English, AND how to play online with MHGU Switch users.
If you want to play mhgu or mhxx on your 3ds, you will need to
1) Install CFW on your 3ds
2) Install the English Patch
3) Convert your Gen file to MHX
4) Download the MHX cross play patch
Before we get started I want to let you know that there are
a few issues you will have online. The first is that you can’t play event quest
with MHGU users and the second is you can’t use Japanese event armor with mhgu
users.
If you are in a hub and someone posts an international event
quest, your 3ds will crash (its ok I’ve crashed many times without issues). The
same thing will happen with switch owners if you wear Japanese DLC armor. If
you like the skills they give you, you can transmog the dlc armor into a nonevent
one and that will work.
The reason why this happens is because the DLC’s are different
and cause a fatal error on the respective systems.
Just because I haven’t had issues doesn’t mean you won’t so if you continue
then you are accepting the risk and I will take no responsibility for any
issues.
Now that that’s out of the way let’s get on with the guide.
Step 0 – Supplies
There are a few basic things that you will need before you
can use this guide. You will need
· Computer
· SD Card that’s larger than 4GB
The only one of these that we will really need to talk about
is the SD card. There are a few brands that Nintendo says are compatible and if
you have an SD card that’s larger than 16GB you will need to format it to Fat32. This is why I would recommend that you pick up the one from the affiliate link
above but if you don’t want to you can make sure you get a compatible brand and
use this to format your sd card.
Step 1 – Getting Custom
Firmware
To install custom firmware on your 3ds there are plenty of
guides out there like this one for the current firmware version 11.04.0-46.If
you have an older firmware or there is an update after I post this, you just
need to go on YouTube and search “how to get custom firmware on your 3ds [enter
current firmware version]”
Step 2 – Install the English
Patch
This video walks through the steps on how to install it, but
here are the steps
1)
download the latest English patch
2)
move it to the “cias” folder on your sd card.
3)
Apply the patch to a clean unpatched copy
4)
Install it with FBI
I have a link for the latest patch here and you just need to
drag and drop it onto the folder called “cias” on your 3ds’s SD card. If you don’t have that
folder already you can just create one. Make sure you’re your copy of MHXX is
unpatched and you see check this by starting the game. If everything is in
Japanese then it’s more than likely unpatched.
Next go into FBI, navigate to your cias folder and install
the patch.
One thing that you need to do is make sure game patching is
enabled to see that patch. To do this, hold select while your 3ds is turning on
then use the d-pad to select enable game patching and press A to enable it,
then press start to reboot your system.
Step 3 – Converting your
save file from MHGen to MHX
If you are starting a new file then feel free to skip this
step. Next we’re going to convert your MHGen save to MHX. This is necessary so
all of our progress from MHGen will carry over to MHXX.
**Make Sure to Back up your File Before Copying it Over**
I am not responsible for any lost data
We will be deleting some items and weapons so if you want to
keep them you will want to make 2 backups. The first that would have all of
your old gear and second that will be used for conversion.
To make a back up of your save you can use a program called
checkpoint. Download the "Checkpoint.cia" file, move it to your SD card's "cias"folder, then install it to your sd card using fbi This is going to save a copy of your save on your SD Card. Before
we continue you will need 1 save file where you have deleted
all event items, armors, and unregistered all armor sets that were using them. This
will save you a headache and make the process run much smoother.
After you are done with that you can move it to your
computer with an FTP client or with the sd card reader.
You need to create a character in MHX before converting so
that there is a file to convert to. If it tells you to update MHX you can
ignore it. You do not need the latest version to do this.
This character will be replaced by your MHGen one so I
recommend just rushing through the creation process.
Once it’s been created then you can use the Homebrew
application MHX Data Manager to convert your MHGen save to a MHX one.
**Note if you already have a MHXX save file you must delete
it before you can reimport your save file.
Step 4 – Converting your
save file from MHGen to MHX
You’re almost there we are all the last step! Download the patch
and put all 3 files in the following location in your SD card.
“Luma/titles/0004000000197100”
Then you are done! Now you should be able to play online and
if you are looking for people to play with come join us on the discord.
